Yahoo! tops US web rankings
The latest monthly analysis of online consumer activity in the United States has revealed that Yahoo! sites remained at the most visited during September, with Wikipedia sites and New York Times Digital both moving up into the top ten.
That is according to the internet measurement company comScore´s Media Metrix, which revealed that political sites gained a large quantity of traffic (17 per cent) during September, as political controversies dominated the headlines.
Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore´s Media Metrix service, noted: "Traditionally, presidential campaigns pick up intensity after Labor Day with the primaries just around the corner. So it´s not surprising to see a jump in activity in the September before an election year."
With the beginning of the new NFL season in the US also kicking off in September, there was an eight per cent increase in consumer interest in sports sites, with Yahoo! Sports alone receiving 24.6 million visitors (up 22 per cent from the previous month).
