Google forced to hand over YouTube data
Google has been ordered to hand over terabytes of data to media giant Viacom including users´ personal details.
Viacom, which owns MTV, filed a copyright infringement case against Google for hosting thousands of its copyrighted videos on YouTube.
Google is trying to get permission to remove all users´ login details before it hands over the information to Viacom.
Catherine Lacavera, Google´s senior litigation counsel, said: "We are disappointed the court granted Viacom´s overreaching demand for viewing history."
"We will ask Viacom to respect users´ privacy and allow us to anonymise the logs before producing them under the court´s order," she added.
Google claims it follows the law by removing copyrighted material from the website when it is made aware of it.
But Viacom has said that Google is a willing accomplice to users uploading the company´s videos to YouTube, according to AFP.
Viacom said it had no choice but to sue Google after a "great deal of unproductive negotiation".
